The Easter Lily

   There are many symbols around us in the church during the different Christian seasons.  At Easter time children all think about the Easter egg.  Perhaps, we have lost track of the idea that out of the egg comes new life just as Jesus came out of the tomb for our new life.

   Kenneth Mortonson tells us the Easter Lily ..."is like a trumpet that proclaims this great day.  White is the color of maximum light and reminds us of Jesus, who said, 'I am the light of the world.'  Inside the flower we see little specks of gold.  Jesus said that he came so that we might have abundant life.  Gold is a symbol of richness and abundance.

   The little thing in the center of the flower that has three bumps on it reminds us that we know God in three ways as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Jesus came to show us the true nature of God.  

   Green is the color of things growing.  The green leaves remind us that we are to grow into true life with Jesus.

   The lily grows from a bulb, which is like a tomb, and bursts forth with new life at Easter.  So the lily is a good symbol to help us to remember what we celebrate on Easter.  In Jesus we have a new, rich, beautiful life."
